Captain Michael Matulewicz is a native of Blackwood, New Jersey. He graduated from Saint Joseph's University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. After initially working in education at Atlantic Cape Community College, he changed careers and entered the maritime industry. He attended SUNY Maritime College, obtaining his Merchant Mariner's License in 2014. Previous to his return to Hawk Hill, he spent over a decade working as a tugboat captain and docking pilot. In these roles, he aided the safe navigation of vessels in the ports of Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York until he experienced a career-ending injury. During this time, he had continually sought formation in Ignatian Spirituality, participating in the Office of Ignatian Spirituality's Contemplative Leaders in Action Program (CLA) and the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life (SEEL) formation program through Loyola Retreat Center in Morristown and SJU. He is also active in his Polish Heritage and local parish and is the producer and host of the podcast "Pierogi to Prayer" through the Polish Apostolate of the Diocese of Camden. Having undertaken program organization and support for several Catholic faith-based and Polish initiatives, he is excited to bring his skills and varied work experience to the Office of Mission.
