Kevin Murphy, PhD, received his B.A. from Towson State University and his M.A. and PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park. He arrived at University of the Sciences in August 2009 after 15 years in the Midwest. At Saint Joseph's University, he teaches a variety of Asian subjects, including Modern Japan, Modern China, The Atomic Bomb in Film and History, and Introduction to East Asia. On the American side, he teaches the American Civil War, and The American Frontier in Film and History.
His research interests deal with the intersection of Japanese and U.S. culture. His third book, "Inside the Bataan Death March: Defeat, Travail and Memory," was published in 2014.
He has travelled widely, and has visited more than 40 countries, many in Asia. He has received grants to attend faculty development seminars in China, Vietnam, and India, and he spent four months teaching in Thailand. He has circumnavigated the world twice on the University of Pittsburgh’s Semester at Sea program, teaching Asian history as the ship visited numerous ports. He lived in Japan for four years and has returned many times.
