Janina Levin, PhD

Adjunct Professor

Janina Levin

Department

Department of English, Writing and Journalism
Contact

Janina Levin is a literary critic that has published peer-reviewed articles in Review of Communication, Journal of Modern Literature, James Joyce Quarterly and Novel: A Forum on Fiction. Her teaching and research interests include medical humanities, narratology, men and masculinity, moral philosophy and empathy. Her dissertation on cuckoldry uncovered how the modernist male writers James Joyce and Henry James recast the betrayed husband to represent the “empathetic man” rather than the fool he appeared to be for medieval audiences. Janina received an MA in Creative Writing and a PhD in English Literature (History of the Novel) from Temple University and is currently pursuing a certificate in medical writing and editing at University of Chicago. Since 2021, she has served as a Blog Content Editor for BMJ's Medical Humanities blog. With over 20 years of experience as a writing instructor and editor, she sees empathy as the foundation for interacting with writers in the early stages of drafting their ideas.

  • “Temporality and the Unconfident Heroine in Henry James’s The Golden Bowl,” Novel: A Forum on Fiction, 53.3 (Fall 2020)

“The Retribution of Time: Slow Thought and Empathic Judgment in Henry James’s Washington Square,” Review of Communication 19.3 (Summer 2019)

“Empathy, Cuckoldry and the Helper’s Vicarious Imagination in Ulysses,” James Joyce Quarterly, 50.3 (Spring 2013)

“Productive Dialogues Across Disciplines: Literature and Empathy Studies,” Review of Rethinking Empathy through Literature (2014), Meghan Marie Hammond and Sue J. Kim, eds. The Journal of Modern Literature (summer 2016)
