Professor Hennes teaches Spanish through the study of culture, literature, translation and discussions about current events. One area of her scholarship examines how certain iconic women from Latin American have been represented in literature, film, political discourse and popular culture. She has examined the Independence-era icons Manuela Sáenz Aizpuru and Juana Azurduy de Padilla, and her most recent work has focused on the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic. A second area of her scholarship is literary translation. She has published two book-length translations and critical editions about the Mirabal sisters, as well as a few smaller projects. She is currently translating a children's book about the human microbiota.
