Dr. Allison Dukes joined the SJU Counseling faculty in 2023 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. She completed her PhD from William & Mary in 2023 and her Master's from William & Mary in 2020. Her research is largely guided by her past work in a local jail, where she worked to offer group services to women incarcerated for substance use-related offenses. Her research interests include trauma-informed care and substance use, and positive psychology. As a Philadelphia area native, she is interested in learning more about using participatory action research to empower Philadelphians to support their communities, including communities that have been largely affected by the opioid crisis. Dr. Dukes is actively serving the Fishtown area through continued counseling practice.
Dukes serves the SJU Counseling program as Fieldwork Coordinator, supporting students in securing site placements for the practicum and internship experiences. If you are interested in supporting one or more SJU Counseling students during their practicum or internship, please complete this form.
Dukes also serves Prevention Academy at SJU as the Faculty Director; she primarily oversees counseling programming, recruitment of interns to offer services, and the program's research and evaluation.
Further, Dukes maintains the roles of NBCC Campus Coordinator and ACEP Authorized Representative for the counseling program (ACEP No. 3091), connecting graduating students with the organization to take their exams, and offering continuing education (CE) credits to practitioners in the area. She serves as Assistant Editor for Counselor Education and Supervision, and a review board member for Journal of Counseling & Development. She has published in several journals (e.g., Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Substance Use and Misuse, Counselor Education and Supervision) and has presented at national, regional, and state conferences on topics such as outcome research in counseling, research methodologies, and LGBTQ+ populations.
